The process of traditional upholstery

People are amazed at how labour intensive the complex upholstery process is.  A coil sprung seat consists of up to nine different layers.  The webbing supports the coiled springs.  These are sewn in place then laced into the right position, and covered with heavy hessian.  More stitching ensures the next layer of horsehair or coir can be built and shaped into the right profile.  This is topped with a second layer of hessian, and stitched to give the seat edge strength and structure.  This is topped with more hair, then a layer of cotton felt all held down by calico.  Now the seat is ready for the most important layer, your chosen fabric.

What our fantastic clients say

“During my years as a regular customer of Pump House Upholstery I have found the quality of their work to be second to none. This is a business which combines first class craftsmanship with charming efficiency, making it a pure pleasure to deal with them.”
"Thanks for the chairs yesterday, they look really super, I am so pleased with them, your standard of work is excellent."
“I have recently had two large chairs re-upholstered by The Pump House in Black Torrington. I can't tell you how wonderful they look! Mary has done a complete overhaul on a barn find wing back chair and again on a chair (or throne as I like to call it!) stuffing the back with horse hair and making it look fit for a queen! The woodwork has also been cleaned and polished and delivered back to me looking amazing. I cannot recommend them highly enough.”
“John and Mary at Pump House are the most brilliant upholsterers, chair cover and curtain makers. They have done many jobs for us at Hartland Abbey, all to the highest standard and beautifully finished. We could not recommend them more highly.”
